A bad bush is better than the open field.

At least nine miners died in an explosion that occurred in a private coal mine in Colombia’s northwestern province of Antioquia, authorities said on Thursday.

The explosion was caused by an accumulation of methane in the mine, 3 km away from the city center of Amaga, according to Amaga’s Health Secretary, Carlos Aguirre.

“There were about 15 to 20 miners working in the hollow when the accident happened,” he said. “Several injured miners have been sent to hospital.”

Amaga is rich in coal. The most serious accident in this city occurred in 1977, when as many as 86 miners working in another coal mine died of the same cause.
