A bad bush is better than the open field.

“The embassy seemed out of step. They were very disappointing, very inflexible,” Sue Higgins, head of the Parliament Hill School for Girls, said, according to the newpaper.

She said one embassy staff member had refused to visit a teenage girl isolated in a hospital because he was afraid of catching the virus, according to the report.

The group was first quarantined in Beijing’s Yanxiang Hotel on July 18, when three girls were confirmed to have contracted the flu.

Within days a fourth girl had tested positive and was taken to another hospital from her classmates.

“The girl is a fussy eater, and I was desperately trying to get the embassy guy in Beijing to have bottled water and food of a type I knew she’d eat sent in,” Higgins said.

“But when the embassy eventually came back to us they said only that, yes, they could get food, but only if I got money and a list to them,” she added.

“The Foreign Office in London was brilliant. The doctors in Beijing were brilliant. Even the hotel staff were brilliant – getting laptops to the girls in quarantine so they could e-mail home, and getting food brought in,” the head teacher added.

Higgins, who tried in London to arrange water and food parcels for the girl, eventually asked her Chinese mother-in-law to mobilize contacts in Beijing.

“She also helped when the girls were coming out of hospital, while the teachers were still in quarantine. The parents were upset and worried. The British embassy really let parents and the vulnerable children down,” Higgins said.
